News of the December meeting quizzes and the talk by Mel Rees at the January meeting. December MeetingMembers enjoyed a festive social evening on December 6th, in spite of the gale force winds and low temperatures. The evening began with two quizzes arranged by Sheila Wilson. Our brains were severely taxed and no team had all correct answers! Following the quizzes we had a “pot luck” buffet with contributions from all members. Jan Leftley once again organised her unique version of “pass the parcel”, a firm favourite with members, and a game a number of us have played with family and friends at home. The evening ended with a Christmas-themed raffle. Val Edwards January MeetingNineteen members were welcomed by secretary Sheila Wilson, who then introduced Mel (Melvin) Rees. His talk, “Bought a Book too – that’s Life!” was both entertaining and humorous. He began writing seventeen years ago after losing money at the hand of a business colleague and describes himself as a Humorist, having written four books under the pseudonym Anthony Man (A. Man). He grew up in Battersea, South London, but now lives in Ashvale, near Guildford. Mel’s talk was littered with amusing stories and anecdotes, and he also introduced tales of his family life, which produced much laughter. After thanking Mel for his extremely entertaining talk, Sheila advised members of the next meeting, on February 1st at 8 o/c in the Church Hall, when Mrs. Jinkinson will give a talk on Rowfant House (new members always warmly welcomed). The meeting ended with refreshments served by Jan Lomas, Beryl Harvey and Carol Trotman. Margaret Wilkins |
